Artist statement
We Humans, are just like animals, and street is our new natural habitat. Like a wildlife photographer, I study the human species up close, in its environment. From reality, I can create an infinite number of worlds projected onto my camera’s sensor — some entirely abstract, others distorting reality in favor of a fiction of which I am the author. And sometimes, I simply document stories that need no rewriting.
Whether in candid scenes of everyday life or in intimate moments that some allow me to capture, the human being fascinates me and remains at the core of my work. The passage of time, and the fragility it brings — much like the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi — help shape the raw, organic aesthetic that defines my art. I am drawn to texture, to the randomness of life itself, from which emanates a beauty that is difficult to explain.
When I was twelve, I used to create animated films set to music. That was the first time I asked myself why. Back then, and still today, only one answer comes to mind: to evoke an emotion so deep that, if only for a moment, it allows us to accept our human condition.
Biography
Lex Mopas is a French street & documentary photographer, and visual artist. Raised between France and North America (Canada, California). From an early age, Lex was drawn to the visual arts — drawing, photography, stop motion, videography, and animation. He taught himself videography and began producing music videos, short films, and other audiovisual projects. The world of cinema had clearly captured his attention.
He studied for one year at the University of Lyon 2, majoring in Art History with a specialization in Cinema. The following year, he decided to take a different path and enrolled at BBA INSEEC Business School to study International Business. His academic journey took him to London, Monaco, South Korea, and Switzerland.
When the time came to complete his final internship, he decided to work as the content creator and community manager for his parents’ small restaurant-boutique « Cyril Nitard ». For six months, Lex dedicated himself daily to promoting their business: he produced short videos for social media — one of which reached 14 million views — and launched a YouTube channel focused on recipes, which grew to over 5,000 subscribers and videos surpassing 80,000 views. Thanks to his efforts and results, he graduated as valedictorian of his marketing major.
